Introduction THIS year I have dealt with a number of topics quite unashamedly representing my own close interests gastroenterology, the biliary system, peripheral vascular surgery, cancer surgery, diseases of the breast and wound healing. I hope this review gives a fair picture of the continued clinical and experimental advances which surgeons throughout the world are making in the scientific progress of our speciality.
